LATE CABLEGRAMS.
,• THE ASYLUM CALAMITY, MONTREAL, May 7. The victims of the Longue Point Lunatic Asylum fire were principally females confined in the wingsetapart for v olent patients and they were slowly roasted to death. The fire was caused by a lunatic firing the cupboard, and owing to the lack of water and appliances for giving the alarm, the flumes spread with great rapidity. It is now estimated that 40 perished. Dating the confusion attendant on the fire some 250 of the inmates escaped into the woods, and are still uncaptured. One horiihle feature of the calamity was that a number of female patients were outraged by Vonghs. The damage is estimated at a- million dollars. ; A COLLIERY ON FIRE. 350 MINERS ENTOMBED. LONDON, May 7. A colliery at Leigh. Lancashire, is on fire. Three hundred and fifty, of the workmen are entombed, and the work of rescue is being carried on from an adjoining pit. ; u , ‘ i LONDON MINING EXHIBITION. At the request of Sir Saul Samuel, Agent-General for New South ; Wales, the opening of the Mining Exhibition has been postponed until July.
