THE DUPLICATE CABLE.
I SHORE END LANDED. THE COST ABOUT £200,000. Wakapuaka, May 6. The cable steamer Scotia landed the shore end of the duplicate cable at 8.45 this morning, and at 11 steamed slowly out of Cable Bay, laying the short or thick part of the cable. The laying of the deep sea portion was concluded on Sunday evening when the end was buoyed. When the shore end has been paid out and a final splice made, which is expected to be done to-morrow, the second cable will be practically complete. The new cable has been placed somewhat to the north of the original one, and is in deeper water than any other marine cable, soundings having given the greatest depth at 2800 fathoms. The Scotia left Botany Bay at noon last Saturday week, having on board 1265 knots of cable contained in three immense tanks, the cable being of five different types, and especially constructed for these seas. The cost of the cable is, roughly, £200,000. Tests are being carried on the whole time, as the cable is being paid out, and everything is going like clockwork. Dr. Lemon left in the Scotia, which will return to Nelson in a day or two. The Scotia is the largest cable steamer seen in these waters.
