ENGLISH RACING.
Consequent on the debut of the Hon. J. White’s colt Ivirkham in the Hastings Plate at Newmarket on Tuesday, there has been more than ordinary interest taken in English turf matters this week. With the accounts to hand telling us how Kirkham was on the big side, his forward running is surprising. The “form” certainly was nothing to blow about, but still it shows that the son of Chester can race, and we can anticipate better things of him at the backend of the season. A wise course was pursued in scratching Kirkham for the Two Thousand Guineas on Wednesday, for now that a line has been obtained about his merits, Mr M. Dawson will be able to give him a Derby preparation during the next four weeks. After the running of Surefoot, Le Nord and Heaume during the week, the success of Kirkham in the Great Epsom cannot be expected.
