THE KUAOTUNU GOLDFIELD.

Kuaotunu, May 3. Carbine.— Sinking on the reef is being continued with excellent prospects. A few pounds of fair picked stone has come to hand from the last breaking down. The stone, if cleaned, would yield lOdwt to the lb. There is no general run of this rich stone, still it is well distributed through the hangingwall portion of the reef. The reef is about 4 feet in width and split in two sections, by what appears to be a horse of mullock. The footwall portion apparently underlies more so than the hangingwall, and will junction with the hangingwall in another 5 or 6 feet of sinking. This junction, in my opinion, is the cause of the rich stone now coming to hand. The stone in appearance is a clear brown stone, and the gold is well distributed through the solid stone, which looks well for the prosperity of the newly-formed company. The trial parcel is being selected from this winze, and should yield handsomely. It is just as well to remark that the run of gold is fully 200 feet from the Try Fluke boundary. Try Fluke. —There is no change to report, only that the reef has widened out to 10 feet, and shows gold occasionally. Mr Fraser is making fair progress with the battery and other connections. He has a lob of unforeseen work, which will take them considerably longer than they expected. However, a fair start should be made early in June. Red Mercury. —Sinking on the reef is being continued with very slow progress. The country is very tight, still the reef when broken down shows gold of a very fair quality. The contractors in the low level are penetrating a very hard but not unkindly class of rock for gold. The progress here will be slow. Golden Gate.— The Company are driving a crosscut to intersect all the reefs worked on in the trenches. The country here is all ’ that could be desired for gold. Secret Claim (Nicholas and party) adjoins the Golden Gate, and comprises a portion of the ground thrown off by the Golden Gate. The proprietors have unearthed a reef 1 foot in width and showing gold freely. There is a large amount of mineral in the stone, which is very similar in nature to the Thames ores. Otama.— Have gob a large quantity of stuff bagged ready for carting to the beach. The top or surface block is exhausted as far as opened up. Operations are now confined to the intermediate level. The leader here is rather pinched and small, but may open out at any foot driven on. Nemesis. The manager is working steadily on the different reefs with excellent prospects. Golden Streak.— The contractors have extended the driye another 40 feet. Up to the present nothing of importance has been cub. The country is really first-class for gold, and speedy progress is being made through it.
