AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE.

LECTURE BY PROFESSOR THOMAS. Auckland, April 21. The first lecture of this season on “ Agricultural Science ” was delivered by Professor Thomas on Saturday in the new rooms provided in what may now be termed the University Building, Eden Crescent, formerly the old Survey and Land Office, which has been fitted up for university purposes. We congratulate the Professor on his success in creating bo much interest on this important subject that a larger room than was formerly at his disposal in the old Museum Building, was required to accommodate the large number who attended this his first lecture. The room was filled with an attentive and appreciative audience, ladies forming a fair proportion. The lecture was of an introductory character, illustrated on the screen, and made plain, pleasing and instructive. After briefly reviewing the problem the farmer has to face and considering the conditions, the lecturer devoted his time principally to the analysis of a plant, one being illustrative of the whole that a farmer might require for a varied harvest, each plant containing its proportion of carbon, hydrogen, sulphur, phosphorus, nitrogen, iron, lime, magnesia, and potash. We hope that the interest excited on this subject vital to the welfare of our district will not be allowed to lapse, but that Professor Thomas will be encouraged in his work. If the continuing lectures are as easy to bo understood as the one just delivered we can assure the most simple and unlearned that they need not fear the long words we have used, they are made perfectly clear and intelligble.
