to Bourke towiiship from flood'waters which threaten to overwhelm the town.
Bourke now resembles a fortified town, from the earthworks which have been thrown up around it to keep out the water. An electric lighting- plant has been sent from Sydney to afford additional light to those working on the embankments, and to enable work to be carried on at night. Large bodies of navvies are being despatched from Sydney to speed, to strengthen the parties now engaged on the protective earthworks. Immense volumes of water are coming down the , Calgoa river and washing away all the homesteads on its banks. It-is feared that when the flood reaches Bourke the town will be doomed. At the present time a gigantic sheet of twenty miles of water surrounds Bourke.
