CARBINE WINS THE LEADING RACES. Sydney, April 10. The A.J.C. Meeting was continued today at Randwick. Heavy rain fell, and the attendance was limited. Prelude and Correze made the running to the half-mile, where they were together, six lengths ahead of the favourite. Though in the next furlong Correze forged ahead, Prelude afterwards passed him, but entering the straight Carbine came up like a thunderbolt, caught the colt at the distance, cut down the filly in the last twenty yards, and won by half a length. The Welter Handicai- fell to tho lion W. A. Long’s Daniel, Narco second, anrl Marcella third. There were twenty-three starters. Betting: 7to 2onTitan, 6tol against Wilga, 10 to 1 Gatling, 15 to 1 Marco. Gatling was left six lengths behind at the start. Titan gob oft first, and ran away from the others, until in .the straight, Gatling coming on the inside, wore the other two down, but was never able to reach the favourite, who won by two lengths. (Hales) Mr Gannon’s br h Melos, 4yrs, by Goldsbrough—Melody, 9st (Harris)... ... 3 Federation was the only other starter. Betting : Even on Carbine, 5 to 2 against Dreadnought, 3 to 1 against Melos. Federation went off with the lead, Melos two lengths behind, and Carbine next. These positions were almost unaltered for a mile. Three furlongs from home Melos had taken the lead, with Carbine and Dreadnought half a length behind. As they ran into the straight Melos had improved his advantage to two lengths, but just before the distance was reached Carbine and Dreadnought came away, and passed him easily ,_ and the great Musket horse, then disposing without difficulty of Mr White’s representative, won by a clear length. Time, 3min 45s0c* i* * * The City Handicap, a handicap sweepstake of ssovs each, with 500sovs added, one mile and a half, was won by Eveline, Eclipse second, and Yellowstone third.

There were-17 starters. Golden-Crown and Sir William were the favourites, 12 to 1 being the odds against Eveline.

THE HON. J. WHITE’S RACEHORSES.

SENSATIONAL PRICES REALISED,

Sydney, Friday. There was a very large attendance to-day at the sale of the Hon. James. Whites horses, and some sensational prices were realised. The two-year-old gelding Titan . (by Chester —Tempo) was the second animal put up. Mr W. Kelso opened the bidding at 2,000 guineas, and in 100 guinea bids the price was quickly carried to 3,000 guineas, and then, amid breathless excitement, 4,000 guineas was reached. Messrs C. M. Lloyd and E. G. Brodribb were the principle bidders, and the gelding was eventually knocked down to the latter, amid tremendous applause, for 4,600 guineas, the highest price ever given for a racehorse in Australia.

The other prices realised and purchasers were:— Sinecure, 3yr«, by Martini-Henry—The Solent, 700 guineas, Mr C. M. Lloyd, N.S.W. Dreadnought, 3yrs, by Chester —Trafalgar, 2,100 guineas, Lord Kesteven, England.

Rudolph, 3yrs, by Martini-Henry —Rusk, 820 guineas, Mr W. R. Wilson, Victoria. Tribune, 3yrs, by Martini-Henry —Wheel of Fortune, 100 guineas, Mr Oakloj 7 , India. Marco, 2yrs. by Martini-Henry—Melanie, 625 guineas, Mr Johnson, Victoria. Carlist, 2yrs, by Chester—Copra, 550 guineas, Mr H. Dangar, Sydney. Denman, 3yrs, by Chester —Goldfinch, 250 guineas, Mr Woods, Sydney. Prelude, 2yrs, by Martini-Henry—Phil-lina, 2,750 guineas, Mr Dowling, Sydney. Ultimate, 2yrs, by Martini-Henry—Ulti-ma, 220 guineas, Mr Saunders, Melbourne. Utter, 2yrs, by Martini-Henry—Uralla, 400 guineas, Mr H. Oxenham, Sydney. Litigant, 2yrs, by Martini-Henry— Leonie, 1,515 guineas, MrC. M. Lloyd, New South Wales. Dreadnought was afterwards re-sold to Mr Jones, of Melbourne, at an advance of 500 guineas. Mr Brodribb, who purchased Titan, comes from Broken Hill.

Thackeray (7st 41b) went to the post, but after getting rid of Holmes, was taken back to the paddock. Merrie England was the favourite, with Medallion next in demand. Pygmalion jumped away in front from a good start, closely attended by Freedom, Merrie England and Medallion. At the turn Pygmalion began to increase his advantage, and entering the straight with a clear lead of Freedom and Medallion, romped home an easy winner by three lengths, Freedom beating Merrie England (who was eased up) by a head for third honoui-3. Alsace got the best of a good start, and, followed by Ruby and Helmsman, led into the straight. Here Ruby retired, and at the distanco Alsace still led, bub the others closed up, and a magnificent race resulted in favour of Helmsman by half a neck from Alcinous, with Alsace the same distance away, third, and Dudu fourth.
