MR HENRY VARLEY.
. Auckland, April 11. Mr Henry Varley, the evangelist, continued his series of Bible - readings yesterday afternoon in the Y.M.C.A. lecture hall, and in the evening delivered an address in the City Hall. The Bible-reading was very well attended. Amongst the clergy present were the Revs. J. D. Gilmore, T. F. Robertson and G. B. Monro, The subject wa3 “The distinction between sin and sins, given according to the Word of God,” and an instructive address was given. In the evening, at the City Hall, there was a very good attendance, notwithstanding the unpleasant weather. The hall was full downstairs. On the platform the Rev. Mr Williams, Sir William Fox, and Ur. Kenderdine supported Mr Varley. The evangelist delivered his address on “ The Irrational and Destructive Character of Unbelief,” which had been postponed from last evening. In the address Mr Varley endeavoured in an impressive manner to demonstrate that unbelief in the “ saving ” power of Christ is the greatest of all sins, and the unbeliever the worst of social outlaws. Speaking on the power of faith he said that faith and trust were indispensable in all our social relations, in business life, in the family, and it was only natural and right that men should have trust and confidence in Christ and His power to save them. At' the close of the address twenty-three persons responded to the appeal of the evangelist, and rose to show that they had been benefited by the service. This afternoon Mr Varley holds a Biblereading in the Y.M.C.A. Rooms, and this evening at the City Hall he will lecture on “The Broken Image.” On Saturday evening he will lecture in the City Hall to men only on “The Advantages and Obligations of Chastity.” Dr. Kenderdine will preside. On Sunday morning Mr Varley will preach in the Pittstreet Wesleyan Church, and will give a Sunday afternoon lecture in the City Hall. On Sunday evening a short outdoor service-will be held at the City Hall before the address.
