(VIA SAN FRANCISCO).
THE IRISH DELEGATES. RECEPTION IN SAN FRANCISCO. Mr John Dillon and Sir Thomas Esmonde met with a magnificent reception at the Grand Opera House in San Francisco on the 4th March, on their way home to the Old Country. The house was packed, and the boxes were occupied by some of the most noted people in the town. Dr. N. C. O'Toole was chairman, _ and among those present were Archbishop Riordan, Rev. Father Prendergast, VicarGeneral, and many other influential Catholic clergy and laity. Mr Dillon’s was of course the chief address, and on coming forward was received with cheer upon cheer before he could begin his speech. He spoke to his audience of Ireland and informed them “how she stood,” pictured her in the past, widowed and orphaned and under the heel of the oppressor, and looking into the future prophesied a new era of prosperity for her; a bright time when, ruied by Irishmen, she would be free and happy ; when her sons would be called on no more to blush for her rags and shame, or weep for her sorrow and misery. Sir Thomas Esmonde was also received with enthusiasm. A collection was made at the close by Colonel Barney and others, and with the contributions received by canvassers a total of 6,300 dollars was reached. About 2,000 dollars were taken at the door, thus raising the amount to 8,300 dollars or about £1,650. Cheers were given at the close for the two speakers, for Parnell and for the Irish cause.
