THE RICHMOND AT TAHITI.
Auckland, March 27. W hilk Messrs Donald and Edenborough’s island steamer Richmond, which arrived from her South Sea trip last night, was lying in Papeete (Tahiti) a few days ago, Captain Hutton, commander, was, on behalf of himself, his officers and crew, made the recipient of a very flattering testimonial from the French and English passengers, who were travelling on the steamer when she encountered the severe hurricane in January last. The testimonial was presented by Capb. A. G. S. Hawes, H.B.M. Consul for Tahiti, and was the more pleasing in that the idea originated among tfie French passengers themselves. This tends to show the high estimation in which Capt. Hutton and his steamer are held among our French neighbours in the Society Group. The following is a copy of the testimonial Tahiti, February 3rd, 1893. Captain R. G. Hutton, s.s. Richmond : Sir, —“We, the undersigned, who were passengers on board your ship during her recent voyage from Auckland to Tahiti, beg to express to you our united high admiration of your gallant conduct during the terrible hurricane that we encountered on the 15th and 16th of January last. “ We feel that weowe a debt of deep gratitude, not only to you especially, bub also to the officers and men under your command, for the prompt and indefatigable exertions displayed by you and them throughout the perilous fury of the storm ; nor can we fail to remember the encouraging words with which you inspired us with confidence during moments that must indeed have been to you, even, most anxious and trying. We are aware that words of ours must fail to fully represent our high appreciation of your conduct, but we trust you will accept this expression of our most sincere gratitude and thanks and further, our best wishes for your future welfare and success.
