RACING OF THE PRESENT DAY.

In the last issue of the “Sportsman’ appears an interesting article from the pen of “Sterling,” in which the following truism appears :—“ It will be a good thing for tho turf of Australia when the shallow and sentimental pretence that the sport of racing is conducted and practised for sport alone is done away with. The truest sportsmen we have in Australia like to know that the horses they race leave a credit balance at the end of each, year’s racing. That they keenly de-’ light in a closely - contested race, and in seeing a game horse well ridden gain them kudos and honour I thoroughly believe, but I quite decline to accept any sentimental humbug as to their being pleased when such a contest proves that some one else’s horse is better than their own. If the names of all the owners of horses in wide Australia were written down, what percentage thereof are even independent of the monetary results ? A very small one. That this is to be regretted I have no doubt, but it would be far more regrettable if we were bound to believe that because men are nob really wealthy, it is impossible they should be honourable.”
