AUCKLAND AUTUMN MEETING.

Last night, the acceptances for the Easter Handicap and Steeplechase, together with general entries, and payments for the St. Leger and Champagne Stakes, fell due. They are most satisfactory, totalling 120, against 87 last year. Tirailleur, Quadrant, and Cissy have paid up for the St. Leger, but it may be the two last named will not see thepost, and in that case, only half of the stake would go to Mr Gollan’s colt. Hawke’s Bay is represented in the Champagne Stakes by Aronoel, and Captain Russell’s filly has run so well during the season that the chance of keeping the rich stake in Auckland is none too rosy. In any case, a win will not be begrudged by us to such a straight-goer as the Colonial Secretary. The Hurdle Race has filled up in an astonishing manner. Last year there were five entries, and this year they number seventeen, which is more than gratifying after the repeated losses we have sustained from the ranks of our jumpers by being sent to Australia. Among the new names that figure in the list are : Donad, by Patriarch—Flora McDonald, brought up from Gisborne this week ; Jenny (late Rosebud), who hails from Taranaki; Ruapehu, winner of the Second Hurdle Race at the last Wanganui Meeting ; KiHarney (owned in Dargaville); The Colonel (Mr Bobbett’s recent purchase) ; and Darnley, who ran prominently in tho Napier Hurdle Races during the past fortnight. Out of the seventeen handicapped by Mr Evett for the Easter Handicap, six have dropped out, Leopold, Antelope, and Loch Ness beingthe three prineipalabsentees, and the only malcontents from the Steeplechase are Guy Fawkes and Melrose, both of whom are in Sydney. George Wright has accepted with both Hilda and Cissy in the Easter Handicap, and if the last-named j does well during the forthcoming week, and is the stable selection, I shall have her on my side. Raglan’s weight will not stop him from winning, but at present he is best left alone. Leorina’s chance is improved by the absentees from the list. Patchwork is weighted up to his best form, while Cynical must command respect on his Napier running. Rataplan cannot be overlooked, but my fancy of the lot is Cartridge, and her most dangerous opponent, I think, will be the selected of Wright’s pair., The Steeplechase may turn out a better 1 race than we anticipate. Darnley had good horses finish in front of him in the J Napier Hurdle Races, and Jenny has a fair reputation in Taranaki. The local | horses—Messenger and. Recruit—both know the country, which is in their favour, and I think one of the pair will turn out to be the winner.
