MINING NEWS.

Thames, March 28. Lonf H and.— The Adelaide reef was broken down for the first time yesterday afternoon in the winze being sunk to connect with the low level tunnel. The reef is lo inches thick, and colours or gold were freely seen distributed through the quartz, winch should shape well at the battery. Excellent progress is still being made with the 10 MaToueen*. —When breaking down the No. 4 lode in the drive yesterday afternoon colours of gold were freely seen in the ouartz. The country on both walls ot the reef is of a favourable nature for —The crushing is shaping for a good rcfcui n* mi Dives.— The mine manager reports : llie reef in the main drive was broken down for a length of 10 feet on Monday. The reef was '’rather small, showing some good minerals but not any gold. The rise is up a further distance of 8 feet. The reef is about one foot in thickness, and whon breaking down a few colours of gold were seen, but no nicked stone obtained. The rise is now up high enough to drive an intermediate level to connect with the main winze, aqd I am making preparations to start this next week. I commenced driving to cut the Occidental reef on Monday la=t and I think we should have it in hand in about a fortnight. There arc 28 loads quartz on hand, and, if possible, I intend to commence crushing on Monday next. Mr James Coutts has resigned the management of the Trenton mine and has accepted the position of manager of the Caledonian mine. Mr Edward Kersey Cooper has purchased the Caledonian Company’s battery.

Coromandel, March 26.

Royal Oak.— The mine manager reports “ A start has been made to sink on No. 5 run. The reef at present is large, looking much better and the ground moie solid and favourable in sinking. In the rise in No. 3 level on No. 3 run, the reef at present is not looking so well, but the ground is becoming more mineralised. The rise is up to whero gold may be expected at any time. The reef, west side of the range, continues about tho same, with good pi aspects. The tributera have completed their crushing, which exceeded expectations, yielding 1460 z retorted gold, the most part of which came from the cross leef which crosses No. 2 near the surface.

Thames, Murch 20. Lone Hand. —The Moa reef was broken down in the low level tunnel yesterday afternoon, when good dabs of gold were seen through the quartz. This is important, as it is the first gold seen in this reef since the drive entered the Company s ground, and there is a considerable extent of backs available upon it. Tokatea Company.— McKeown’s tribute has yielded r>3oz of gold ; Sbewait s tiibute, lloz ; and Scott’s tribute, loz of gold.

The following are the battery returns tor several of the Reefton gold mines for last week Globe : 1740zs of amalgam from 370 tons. Inglewood : 3180/.s of amalgam from 70 tons. Progress: lOSozs of amalgam (5 stampers). No. 2 South Ivoep-it-X)ark : 71ozs of amalgam from 29 tons. Fiery Cross : llOozs of amalgam (8 heads). Last week’s return of 3130zs 15dwts, from the Inglewood, was made up : From boxes, J6sozs"; plates, 104ozs sdwts ; shimmings, 34ozs ; berdans, 7czs ; blankets, Bozs 10 dwts. A fid dividend has been declared. The stopes are now looking very well, and a shoot of gold is running through the stone.
