j Further particulars are to hand with regard to the hurricane at. New Caledonia on March sth. Old residents state that it was the heaviest storm experienced for ten years. Some idea of its violence may be infe red from the fact that trees were completely uprooted and houses unroofed. Some of the plantations were alsodestroyed. Thestorm was accompanied by a heavy downfallofrain, which completely flooded Noumea, doing considerable damage. Telegraphic communication all over the island was interrupted by the storm, and consequently the full extent of the damage done could not be ascertained. A report had, however, been received from the east coast of New Caledonia to the effect that the gtorrri wUs severely felt there, and thatthere had been loss bf life. The schooner' Fleetwing,- of Auckland, had a narrow escape 1 from destruction during the hurricane. She was making for Noumea when the hurricane came bn, and had her sails carried away. The captain sought shelter inside the reef. There both anchors were lost, and then, for the safety of all concerned, the schooner was beached. She remained ashor.e for some days,, and when the weather, moderated the captajn spcpeeded in/ floating her and taking hgr into N°hW e ? £ a fe*y, A.U.S;N. Company’s steamer Ten.tprdpn also fell in with the hurricane and she had to put back to Noumea,
