AMATEUR ATHLETIC SPORTS.
The above club held a successful gathering in the Auckland Domain on March 15. It is estimated there were over 3000 people present. The following are the results of the principal events :
Two Mile Bicycle Race. For this thei’e were 9 starters. Selby led for some distance, but Lewis soon took first place and led to the finish, winning easily, with Boord 2, and Lecky 3. Howard and Buchanan were never in it.
Quarter-Mile. —First heat: A splendid race, in which Hutchison came through his men in splendid style and won comfortably in 53sec ; Impey, 2 ; Kilfoyle, 3. Second heat: Laird came up in capital style and won in 51j|sec, with Harvey 2, and Dickey 3. Third heat : Short, 1 ; Hill, 2 ; Smith, 3. Time, 52 l-sth sec. Final heat: Laird, 12yds, 1 ; J. Hill, 35yds, 2; Short, 24yds, 3. Time, 52sec.
120 Yards Hurdles. —R. B. Lusk, owes 20yds, 1 ; H. E. Worep, owes 6yds, 2; G. B. Croker, scratch, 3. Time, 18 2-sth sec. Owen and Batger fell at the third hurdle, and owen was rather badly hurt. Lusk won easily in good style.
Ten Mile Bicycle. F. Boord, 750 yards, 1 ; A. G. Buchanan, scratch, 2; N. R. N. Aickin, 880 yards, 5. Buchanan and Howard, from scratch, had a very uphill task to give Boord, Aickin, and Selby their long starts. Lecky retired when he had gone a couple of laps. At 2\ miles Boord passed Selby, and got second, and at 3J miles he passed Aickin, and rode into first place. Buchanan and Howard began to close up a bib. At about the beginning of the 7bh mile Buchanan had gob his first 310 yards on Boord, bub he could not get off the other quarter mile. In the 9th mile he passed Aickin, with Boord, still at his heels, and the latter won easily. Howard fell back after the 4th mile, and Buchanau got a lap on him before the finish. Time, 37min lOsec. Professor Carrollo's Pupils. —During the progress of the 10 Miles Handicap, Professor Carrollo and his pupils gave a fine display of the dumb'bell exercises, concluding with a maze. They were most successful, and gained great applause. One Mile Handicap.— ln the second lap Clarke (50yds) went up first, and was never headed. Ellis (15yds) and Jeffreys (scratch) both came strongly at the finish,but could only get placed second and third respectively. Time, 4min 39sec. Jeffreys tried to break the Auckland record and sue® ceeded, doing it in 4min 42sec. 250 Yards Handicap (open only to pupils of Professor Carrollo). — A. Mowbray, 9yds, 1 ; C. E. Kissling, 13yds, 2 ; H. Bailey, 10 yards, and W. J. Court, 25yds, 3. There were 25 starters. Mowbray won very easily. Time, 27^sec. High Jump Handicap. —CJpfill, Laurie, Worep, Wood, Hargreaves, and Barnes jumped. Hargreaves went out ab4fb 9|in, Upfill at 4fb 10gin, Worsp and Laurie cleared sft lin. Owing to his handicap, Hargreaves gob third place. Ladies’ Bracelet (300 yards). First heat: W. C. Rhodes, 1; D. Harvey, 2 ; Rees, 3. Time, 33 l-sth sec. Second heat : Weston, 1 ; Collins, 2 ; Dicky, 3. Time, 32 l-sth sec. Third heat: Kissling, 1 ; Myers, 2 ; Lusk, 3. Time, 32 l-sth sec. Fourth heat: Laird, 1; Martin, 2 ; Thompson, 3. Fifth heat: Chatfield, 1; Goldwater, 2. Time, 32 3-sth sec. Final: H. C. Weston, 30yds, 1; W. H. Martin, 18yds, 2 : C. Kissling, 28yds, 3.
Three -.Mile Bicycle Handicap. ~-F. Boord, 275yds, 1; H. A. Lewis, 400yds, 2 ; H. P. Taylor, 350yds, 3. Hoffman fell when he had the race well in hand. Time, lOmin 25sec.
Half-Mile Handicap.— G. B. Croker, 50yds, 1 ; T. Short, 40yds, 2 : J. H. Bull, 50yds, 3. Time, 2min 2 4-sth sec. Winks did 2min 2 3-sth sec from scratch.
