ONE BY ONE.
One by one are vacant places Springing, up along our wnj’S ; One by one we miss the faces, Grown familiar to our gaze. Blade by blade the grass h creeping . .. Over narrow mounds of earth, "Where the missing forms are sleeping, Mindless of the silent hearth. Years roll by, their changes ringing, Peals of joy or knells of woe, Home to us the fruitage bringing Of the tares or wheat we sow. One by one the flowers we cherish Bud and bloom and pass away ; One by one youth’s phantoms perish In the light of manhood’s day. One by one gray lines come stealing Through the ranks of brown and gold, Stamps affixed to Time’s annealing, When the fires of youth wax cold. One by one new ties we fashion, Round which love’s green shoots entwine; Day by day the storms of passion Tear away some tender vine. One by one the links are broken In our life’s imperfect chain ; Love’s fond pledge and friendship’s token, Rent by. destiny in twain. One by one the shades of even , Close about the weary feet, Toward the mystic border driven, Where the past and future meet. One by one Life’s waves inflowing Cast their sands upon the shore ; One by one Death’s tides outgoing Sweep them back forever more.
