Both men soon gob to work, bub Cowper allowed his mate to do most of the scoring, and the runs mounted very fast, Cottam laying on the wood in splendid style. Every ball was played effectively, and the twos and threes were piled up very quickly. Changes of bowling were tried, but both batsmen seemed quite at home, and Cottam still kept the score moving, till at last he left his crease to hit one from Stemson and Fowke had his bails off. His score was 56, gob by fine cricket. McGlinchy was next, but after an over or two he gave Fowke a chance behind off Stemson and retired.
