The correspondent of a Berlin paper writes from Japan:— ‘A new Sinto temple was lately erected at Tokio. It i 3 the custom here to construct these places of worship of wood, and in order to fasten the beams ropes are used, not made of ordinary hemp, bub of human hair, as a voluntary offering to the deity to whom the temple is dedicated. In the construction of the above temple no less than 24 ropes were used, measuring in the aggregate 4,528 ft in length, and of a thickness Iff from four to seven inches in circumference. Their total weight was 8,847 lb, and it is estimated that upwards of 350,000 individuals contributed to make up tbi3 quantity.’
