CLONCURRY EVICTIONS.
London, February 25. Seventy persons who had been arrested by the police in connection with the eviction of Irish tenants at Cloncurry, Kildare, caused a serious riot. On arrival of the prisoners at Newbridge the police were repeatedly charged by interested spectators, and twenty members of the force were injured. The Dragoons were subsequently called out and cleared the streets.
MAITLAND DISASTERTHE FLOODS ABATING. Sydney, Feb. 26. The floods caused at Maitland by the rise of the Hunter River are now abating. _ THE STEAMER SIKHSTRUCK ON A REEF. CARGO SERIOUSLY DAMAGED. Sydney, Feb, 26. The quarantined steamer Sikh has a quantity of cargo for New Zealand. During the voyage from China she struck a reef in Torres Straits, and is nosv leaking freely. The steamer’s cargo is mostly sugar, and is believed to have been seriously damaged.
