DUNEDIN RACES.

Dunedin Feb. 20. At the second day’s races of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Meeting yesterday, the backers of favourites had again a bad time of it, and winners were certainly not picked beforehand to any extent. Tempest was a better favourite for the City Stakes than ' Freedom (by Captivator—Maid of Honour), bub Mr O’Brien’s colt beat the filly easity. In tho D.J.C. Handicap, Lady Florin, on the strength of her form on Wednesday, was rushed, and was almost a level money favourite. Mr Goodman’s colt Blizzard, a son of Gorton, proved the winner, giving his owner a win after a long run of bad luck. The. distance was regarded as beyond Merrie England’s powers, but he was going much faster than anything else at the finish, and evidently a few more galops will bring him back to his old form. His victory in the Railway Plate over such flyers as Pygmalion, Apres Moi, and others, shows that he has lost none of his pace. Gipsy Prince, the brother to Gipsy King, who was scarcely backed, ran out a winner in the Suburban Welter Handicap and paid his 30 supporters over £4o’ each. Results of the leading races are appended : City Stakes Handicap of loOsovs. Five furlongs. Mr D. O’Brien’s b c Freedom, by Captivator—Maid of Honour, Bst 3 01b (Derrifcfc) 1 Mr D. In the straight, Blizzard came away, and finally won by a couple of lengths without punishment. Merrie England, who was going faster than anything else at the finish, beat Mon Loup by a length for second place ; Ixion was fourth, Occident fifth, St. James sixth, and Lady Florin last. Time, 2min Jlisec. Dividends : Inside, £ls 3s ; outside, £lB Gs. Railway Plate of lOOsovs. Weight for age. Four furlongs. Mr H. Turnbull’s c h \\ olverine, 9st (Sharp) 3 Apres Moi, Caliph, Red Cross, Thackeray, and Emmason were the other starters. Thackeray showed a vicious temper, and alter several attempts to get him to the post, the field was sent away without him. Mr Wilson’s colt had tho advantage as tho home turn was rounded, but Derritt touching up Merrie England with the whip, the latter shot to the front, and holding Pygmalion safe, won by a clear length. Time, 50,j:sec. Dividends, £2 9s 6d and £2 7s 6d. Suburban Welter Handicap of 120sovs, with a sweep of 2sovs each ; second horse 20sovs, and third lOsovs. One mile and a furlong. THE DUNEDIN CUP. Dunedin, Feb. 20. Our own correspondent supplies the following account of the running : Dunedin Cur, of 600sovs, with a sweepstake of lOsovs each, second horse to receive lOOsovs, and third 50sovs from the stakes. Two miles and a distance. 913—Hon. G. McLean’s brh St. James, 4yrs, Leolinus Pungawerewere, 7st 121 b (White) J 1012—Mr J. Stephenson’s b h Occident, syrs, by Lapidist—The West, 9st 51b (McDonald) 2 372—Mr R. Kildare’s b g Ixion, syrs, by Be Loup Cassivelaunus mare, 6st 121 b (Wisby)... ... 3 479—Mr 11. Goodman’s cli g Don Cmsar, 6st 71b (Buddicombe) 0 At the fall of the flag St. James and Ixion went off with a couple of lengths’ lead, the favourite lying laSt, six lengths away. This position was maintained till the entrance to the home turn, when the field closed up. Ixion led first into the straight, closely followed by St. James. Occident came fast, though burdened with his weight, and seemed at the entrance to the lawn to have the race in hand so quickly did he reduce the gap, but St. James was not done with, and responding with gameness, managed to keep his nose in front, winning by the shortest possible half head. Many thought Occident got up just in time, but those in the best position to judge, fully support the judge’s verdict. It is unquestionable the result was due to White’s horsemanship, and it is doubtful if he ever handled a mount with better judgment. On returning to scale owner and rider were vociferously cheered. Ixion was a poor third, and Don Ctesar was out-classed. Time, 3min 57;jsec. Dividends, £2 19s 6d and £2 10s.

Racecourse, Feb. 22. The weather was again very fine this afternoon, and the attendance good. A strong southerly wind was blowing. Mammoc was the only non-acceptor for the hurdles, for which Torrent served up a little better ; level money on the favourite, Trimolite, and Cathedral being a good deal fancied. The races resulted as follows : Hurdle Race of lOOsov, two miles and a quarter. Torrent (owner) 1 Cathedral (Walls) 2 Trimolite (Laughlin) ... ... 3 A good start saw Trapper off with a good load, followed by Torrent, and Waitangi; this order was maintained for a mile, when Trapper fell back beaten. Waitangi then went to the front, the favourite still lying handy, with Cathedral close up. Trimolite was last in passing stand the second time. Waitangi cleared the hurdle a length in front of Cathedral, after whom came Torrent and Marshall. Torrent got in front, but Walls continued to press him hard, and when rounding the turn was on terms, but could not maintain the advantage, while Waitangi fell back beaten. A punishing race up the straight resulted in a length victory for Torrent, who was ridden out. Time, 4min 42ysec. Dividends, £2 5s 6d and £2 7s 6d. Hopeful Stakes of 150sov, six furlongs, Investigator 1 Belvidere 2 Miss Ann ... ... .. ... 3 Freedom and Carino were scratched for the Hopeful Stakes. Forbuky Handicap.
