VICTORIAN RAILWAYS.
A HEAVY DEFICIT. ATTRIBUTED TO NEW LINES. Melbourne, Feb. 22. It is understood that the Victorian railway returns for the present financial year will show a large deficit. The “Argus” estimates the deficit at £IOO,OOO, and the “Age ” at £250,000. The Railway Commissioners state that this remarkable falling off has been caused by many new lines having been opened for traffic. Upon these new lines the expenditure exceeded the income, but the Commissioners anticipate that, as soon as they are fairly in going order, the balance will be adjusted.
