The amendment to the Address-in' Reply to the speech from the Throne, in favour of the establishment of a Scotch Parliament, was rejected in the House of Commons by a majority of 40. Mr Hennicker Heaton considers it feasible that cablegrams could be se.it to and from Australia at one shilling per word, if the Eastern Coirpany’s monopoly were terminated. Mr W. S. Caine, Whip of the Unionist party in the House of Commons, writing to the press, expresses the opinion that Mr Parnell has come out of the recent ordeal unscathed.
