SALVATION ARMY.
WHAT BECAME OF £20,000. In a recent issue there was published an extract from a Home paper in which it was stated that the large sum of £20,000 had been raised by the rank and file of the Salvation Army by means of a special period of “self-denial.” The extract concluded with the somewhat significant observation, “ What use was made of this money is not stated.” In explanation, we have received from one of the officers of the Auckland branch of the Army a copy of the English “ War Cry ” of February Ist, 1890, which contains a balance-sheet showing how this money was raised and how expended. Contributions from crops in the United Kingdom produced £9,964; contributions from Army Corps in other countries, £6,035 15s ; these sums together with donations and subscriptions from outside friends,£4,o42 Is Id, making the immense'total of £20,04116s Id. This sum was expended (with the exception of a balance of £196 6s lOd remaining on December 11th, 1889) in various ways, including: Grants for maintenance of international headquarters and special extension purposes, £2,500; maintenance of training homes, £2,000; rescue work, £I,OOO ; sick homes of rest and sick officers, £1,000; food and shelter work, fitting up new depots and supplies, £I,OOO ; expenses of work amongst the poor and slums, £1,014 0s 2d ; to assist in payment of poor corps, £500; extension of new branches abroad, £1,500 ; Africa, £2,500 ; India, £2,000; Sweden, £550; France and Switzerland, £SOO ; Australia, £250 ; Denmark, £100; expense of appeal and sundries, 11,931 9s Id, making a total expenditure of £19,845 9s 3d. The amounts credited to Australia and New Zealand were first instalments. Other accounts which came in late made the total raised by Australia, £2,318 16s Od, and New Zealand, £450. After deducting the grant of £441, the total of Australasia’s self denial was £2,327.
