NEW ZEALAND’S ATTITUDE.

Melbourne, Feb. 14. The “Age,” in a leading article to-day, ea vsT he you th of New Zealand can scarcely be”a good reason for standing aloof, seeing that the colony is nearly as old as Victoria and older than Queensland. It may be admitted that the distance from Australia and her position with regard to the Pacific Islands might justify her ambition for a separate career. The question is whether, keeping aloof from Australia, she will hak’e strength enough to withstand her possible enemies. New Zealand would always be a weak point in the lino of defence, and would require sacrificps on the part of the Sle of this Continent whiph they might ne to make for a m®r e outsider. It would be different if New Zealand were a part of the family, then all the other provinces would in honour be. bound to spend their last shilling and their last man in her defence if required.’’
