The reaper and binder Competition held on the ,15th under the auspices of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Society, was conducted on the principle of judging by the votes of farmers present, and resulted as follows f—-Massey, f>9min» 29 votes; Read and Gray, 83pffn, 19 votes; Hornsby, 97min, 16 votes; McCormick, 99mm, 14 votes; Howard, 65min, 12 votes; Leering, 78min, 5 votes ; Brantford, 77min, 0 votes. About two and a-haif acres were allotted to each machine. Of the ballot papers some twenty were not returned in time, and the holders of these maintained that they would jjaye altered the position of the machines. AH the work was gxcellent, but the method of judging did nofi give satisfaction. The crop was a heavy ohe—bp® o^ B IRifrfd SQ 80 bushels—and Hornsby and McCormick had the worst of it to cut. Massey had been first in both contests.
