RUSSELL JUBILEE REGATTA.
Russell, on the Bay of Islands, is in holiday attire to-day, on the occasion of its Jubilee celebration of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. The form which the celebration takes is that of a regatta. The Treaty was signed on the sth February, 1840, and the Regatta should therefore have been held last Wednesday, but it was postponed till to-day to allow one of the men-o’-war to be present. The Opal arrived there yesterday afternoon. A large number of the residents of the Northern districts are attending the festivities, the Clansman alone having brought over 400 excursionists up to Russell yesterday afternoon. The little river Waitangi, on which the meeting took place for the signing of the treaty, is on the other side of the Bay from Russell, and close by the town is "the site of the famous flagstaff cut down by Hone Heke, so that visitors to Russell will be in the midst of historic associations.
