BRITISH POLITICS.

THE CONTEST BETWEEN CHAMBERLAIN AND CHURCHILL. The New York “ Herald ” correspondent at Birmingham sends particulars of the feeling there regarding the political differences caused by the action of Joseph Chamberlain. The correspondent is in a position to know all. Chamberlain will brook no rival in Birmingham, and as Lord Randolph Churchill’s popularity among the . working men exceeds his own he is bitterly opposed to the introduction into the heart of the citadel of the leader of the Tory democracy. Hence the intrigues set on foot last April and the split, never likely to be healed, so far as the Conservatives are concerned, until the central division is surrendered to them. . If this is not done before the general elections the Cladstonians will sweep the decks at Birmingham. Nothing can prevent disaster but a concession to the Birmingham Conservatives on this question. There are people who will not see this, but their blindness should not be allowed to ruin the party. Chamberlain more than once has caused it to be understood that he must either have his own way in everything or that the Unionist alliance must be broken. Bub is the alliance absolutely in his own hands to do with it what he likes ? Many well-informed persons doubt it.
