OCR TIMBER TRADE.

Auckland, February 6. The export trade in kauri timber, one of North New Zealand’s most valuable products, is rapidly assuming very large dimensions, through the enterprise of the Kauri Timber Company, in whose hands almost all the North Auckland kauri mills now lie. The export of sawn and baulk kauri to the Australian colonies forms the principal item in the Company’s list of outward cargoes, but they are rapidly opening up a fine market in the United Kingdom, where the recent trial shipments of timber appear to have been very favourably received. Already the Company have despatched several large-sailing vessels to London and Glasgow with kauri cargoes, and further large shipments are projected. Their latest vessel despatched is the Orion, a large Norwegian barque of 1,235 tons, which sailed this morning from this port for London direct with a cargo of close on a million feet of timber for the Home market. This is their first vessel from Auckland for Home with a cargo of timber, and in all probability she will be followed by others before long to load up in the Waitemata for Great Britain.

The Kauri Company are also just about to despatch another large foreign vessel for Home, the Swedish barque Olaf Tryevarson which is now lying at the northern port of Whangaroa loading timber for London or Glasgow. She sails shortly with over three quarters of a million feet of kauri. The- Company now have also another large barque ready to load at the Kaipara direct for Home.
