Scene at an Execution.
A faikful story comes from Periguex in France. A youth of 20, under sentence of death for the murder of an old couple, under circumstances of great atrocity, was executed on Saturday morning. Owing to his youth he expected that his sentence would be commuted, and when the executioner and attendant officials appeared in his ceil, roused him from bis sleep, and told him he must die, he resisted to the utmost, uttering piercing screams which could be heard outside the gaol. He had to be held down to have the fatal toilette performed ; he fought with the executioner and the gendarmes, aqd had to be carried to the guillotjne screaming all the time at the tQP of his voice. The executioner had to pull the young man’s head through the lunette by main force, keeping hold of his ear with either hand, until the knife fell and ended this ghastly scene.
