Cheap Wool Press.

We have been requested to publish the fol lowing description of a cheap wool press made and worked by Mr H. Baker, of Woodville, as long ago as 1888. Mr Baker writes to the local paper : “For the information of small flock owners I herewith hand you plans of wool pre3sthab I made last year. The pressure acquired by the following principle is so great that one man can press a4cwt bale of wool with greater ease and quicker than two men can with a screw. The usual wool boxes are placed over a square frame with a roller of wood under the centre of box and long enough to project upon both sides. At one end of roller is a ratchet wheel, worked with a drop catch and lever. The fulcrum is supplied from the axletree. A small block strapped with a strong rope, and end of rope long enough to reach the length of the top box, with an iron link attached to pass over end of cross bar on top of cap. Make fast one end of rope to the roller. Keep the rope through the block and pass rope around the roller and fasten the end bo the bottom of block, thus simply making the roller do duty of second block, and thus acquiring a double purchase. Should I not have clearly made myself understood I shall have great pleasure in showing any person the press in my shed. Bear in mind only one roller is required and a block for each side of the press. If a settler is handy a press should nob cost more than £5 complete, or if made by a tradesman about £7.”
