OHINEMURI COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council, was held in the Council Uhambers, Paeroa, on Saturday last. Present: Crs Nicholls, Robson, Dearie, Nash and Quinn. In the absence of the Chairman, Cr Dearie was voted to the Chair. Minutes of the previous monthly meeting were read and confirmed. Tenders : Contract iS'o. 256: E. Bein, L 22 10s ; D. McCauslaml, Ll 6 10s ; T. Quinn, LD IBs 3d ; T. Doherty (accepted ;, L 8 I2s 6d. (One tender of £22, was informal, there being no signature.) -Contract No. 255 : Cutting Track to new School-house, Karangahake : O. Sorrenson, L 4 10a ; T. Doherty, L 3 4s ; E. Bein, L2 19s 6d ; Wm. Barrett (accepted), L2 19s, Correspondence : Damage to Wharf : To Mr It. P. Gibbons, Junction Flaxmill, inforniing him that as his punt had .got under the County wharf and done considerable damage thereto, the Council field him responsible for payment of the cost pf repairing same. Not Liable From Win. Banting, stating that he was. peithpr occupier or owner of Section 392. Resolved that his name fip struck off
ihe Roll, I Illegal Ending of Flax : From T. E. Shaw, Forest Hanger, stating that he had been up the river, and ascertained that nearly all the flax on.th.e chain reserve had. been cut by natives, acting under instructions -from Mr Bossoiis. Resolved on the motion of .Cr Quinn, seconded by <Gr Nash, That Rossons be sued with respect to all the flax he had cut, at the rate of 2s fid per ton. Slaughter House Licenses : From J. Yugl.ir and J Earl, requesting that their slaughter-house licenses be renewed. Resolved that these applications stand over, pending the report of the Inspector of Nuisances 7 . Kauri Timber : From G. Wilson, Mining Inspector, reporting that Mr Russell, of Waitekanri, had purchased Gfteen kam j trees. Apology : From the Chairman, apologising for his absence. Road to Nctherton j From Netherton settlers, presenting a petition requesting that their rates be expended on making a road through their district, as the present road w: s likely to be closed down at any moment. Consideration of letter deferred. Rangiora Punt: From W. Charlton, stating the punt at Rangiora was in a very unsafe condition, the wire not being strong enough, etc,, and requesting that the matter be attended to. Cr Quinn stated that he had been speaking to 11. Charlton, who stated he would fix the punt up in thorough working order For the sum of L2 2s ; and moved that ho be authorised to do the work. Cr Robson stale 1 he would second the motion, on condition that the work was ca.ried out to the satisfaction of the Foreman of Works. Cr Nash moved as an amendment, That the Foreman of Works he instructed to get the work carried owt, at a cost not excelling £2. Seconded by Cr Nicbolls. Amendment lost, motion carried. Road Crossing : From A. Jo Thorp, asking Council to shift plank crossing on road. Consideration deferred. Not Liable for Rates : Ftom Bank of New Zealand (Paeroa office), stating they were not responsible for rates, as they were only weekly tenants, and stating Messrs Cassel and Bennett were the owners. Valuation Roll : Tlios. Bradley, requesting that Ids name be placed on the Valuation Roll, as owner of Sections 4,5, and 8.
Resolved that the application be granted. Paeroa Wharf : From E. Edwards, staling that the Captain of the e.s. Ruby, had complained to him of the bad state the Paeroa Wharf was in, .that several accidents had happened in the shipment of cargo, and requesting Council to have same repaired, Several of the Councilors expressed their opinion thot Mr Gibbons should be made to pay for the damage done, to the wharf. After considerable discussion it was resolved that if lie did no* guarantee to pay the cn<l of repairing same within two weeks,'"that legal action
be taken with respect thereto. Extension of Tim ■: Fiom W. Collett, asking for an extension of time forcompletion of contiact No. 247. Resolved that the application be granted. Cemetery : The Foreman of Works reported that damage had been done to the Cemetery, by carts, etc., knocking down the pegs. Resolved that public notice be given forbidding any carts to enter the Cemetery. Unpaid Account : From Thos. Doherty, stating he had not been paid for faeincs he had cut, and which had been used by Council, and also for two day’s work. Resolved that the account be paid. Hawker’s Licence : Messrs Phillips and Son, wrote, stiting that they thought hawker’s should be made to pay a license in Paeroa, as well as in other places. Resolved that the Chairman introduce a By-law to that effect. Road to Karangahake : Cr Quinn drew attention to the slate of the road in Karangahake Riding, and moved that £3O be expended on the road, by laying broken gravel, The Chairman sail he thought th t would interfere with the arrangement made with tlie Rank N.Z. After some discussion it was ultimately resolved that the work- be done ; and that it be inserted in the specifications that the contractor would have to wait for his money till June. Blinding Metal on Rond : Cr Robson said he thought that the metal on the Komata swamp road ought to be “ blinded.” Resolved that the work be done. Slaughter-houseLicens.es ; Resolved that the renewal of slaughter-house licenses be granted this year, and that notice be given the owners, that, before licenses will be granted next year the slaughter-houses must be removed at least two chains from the river bank, and five chains from any road ; also, that the fee would have to be pai l in advance. Repairs to Bridges : Resolved that a man be engaged to put a few new planks on the bridges on the Paeroa-Te A rob a road. Contracts Determined : Resolved on the motion of Cr Quinn, That the contracts of E. Bein, T. Quinn, and C. Murphy be determine.!. Thames Harbour : The Chairman and Cr Dearie were appointed to. attend the Harbour Board boundary enquiry, Thame*, as representing the Council ami River Board. Finance R-poit ; The Finance Com-
