CAUGHT A TARTAR.

LONDON’S SHERIFF SUED FOR BREACH OF PROMISE. A Nkw York “Herald” despatch of January 10th says Sheriff Harris, of London, who went into office with the new Lord Mayor, has a delicate bit of work to accomplish before he can breathe freely. Harris is 34 years of ago, one of the youngest sheriffs London ever had. His ambition is to be Lord Mayor. The ©lection to the Shrievalty is the first step. The second step is an election as Alderman. That honour he is pretty safe to achieve in time. To secure the Lord Mayorship it is necessary to have a record without a stain; hence these tears. A suit has been entered against Harris: for breach of promise and damages to the amount of £IO,OOO. The plaintiff is Grace Smith, an estimable young woman of good family, At a recent dinner, at which Harris and Smith were present. Lord Mayor Isaacs proposed the health of Miss Smith as.the future Mrs Harris.

Not a word about the suit has appeared in print and few know anything about it, although two days ago suit was entered in the Queen’s Bench division of the High Court. Harris is desperately anxious that the matter should be settled out of court, and negotiations are now in progress to that end.
