SPORTING NEWS.
THE V.R.C. AUTUMN MEETING. The next fixture of real interest to Aucklanders will be the Autumn Meeting of the Victoria Racing Club. Scots "Grey and Medallion, the two-year-old Nordenfeldt— Locket colt, have already left to battle on behalf of New Zealand owners, and no doubt in a few days hence Tirailleqr: and Jet d’Eau will be ontheir >vay across the herring pond. Therp is a probability of Corunna being taken over along with Cuirassier, bub’ it will remain for the next fortnight to definitely settle the matter. The Weights for the Newmarket Handicap and Australian Cup were duly cabled this week, and the long array of figures Will now provide plenty of pabulum for discussion. A heavy handicap has been made for each race, which will favour the top division. For the Newmarket Handicap, I like nothing better than Scots Grey, for he recorded a splendid performance at the Dunedin Exhibition Meeting, when he defeated Recluse, Forester, and. Francobte over six furlongs ; while Sir William, Rudolph, Sinecure, and Braemar must each have a good chance. The Australian Cup can be left over’for future consideration, but Tirailleur and Chintz are favourably handicapped. THE WELLINGTON CUP. Next Thursday the Wellington Cup ,is run. The final payment fell due last night, which shows the field has dwindled down in an inexplicable manner. Only seven are now left in: I fancy Kobuku will win. BITS OF TURF. Mr John Lynch, of Coromandel, who owns the two-year-old colt Leolantis, has purchased the yearling colt Dancer, by Sword Dance —Vivandiere, knocked down to George Wright at the Mount Wellington sale. The price paid was £2OO. Leopold has bruised one of his feet, hence the colt not being seen out at the A.R.C. Jubilee Meeting. Another effort is to be made in Sydney to train Niagara. The Australian Jockey Club at their annual meeting decided on a reduction of jockeys’ fees for losing* mounts from £3 to £2. Two new members were elected on the committee, Dr. Traill and Mr Chas. A. Good chap (formerly Chief Commissioner of the New South Wales railways). Mr James White did nob seek re-election, on account of his impending trip to England. Writes the “ Referee ” Riccarbon correspondent : —Riccarton necessarily has a very poor chance of netting the Dunedin Cup this time. Merrie England and Lorraine are both very fat, and neither is perfectly sound. Neither can be gob into condition by the date of the decision of the Dunedin Cup.” The stallion Python had to be shot a few days back at Mr Murray-Aynsley’s station at Mount Hutt (Canterbury). He was suffering from old age. Python was bred in New South Wales in 1867, and was by Kyogle out of Nutcub, by Pitsford—Amber by Glaucus (Arab), Kyogle being by William Tell out of Yattendon’s dam, Cassandra.- " ' " 1 . ' : ■ . Mr |M. Loughlin, the owner of Sheet Anchor and -other good ones, is at present in England, and according to a cablegram to the Melbourne “ Sportsman,” he recently offered a sum of 2,000 guineas for the steeplechase horse Emperor. If the offer is accepted Mr Loughlin intends to enter Emperor for the next Grand National Steeplechase at Liverpool. Mr Andrew Toun’s yearlings brought; small prices this year. The top figure was paid for a filly by Grand Flaneur—Agitation, bought by MrW. R. Hall. The colts, numbering 28, realised 2,890 guineas, of an average of 103| guineas ; 26 fillies were disposed of for 2,271 guineas, or an average of 87 guineas j while the grand total of the sale was 6,493 guineas. Major George’s colt Reprisal met with a mishap at his owner’s residence the other week. Lords Onslow and Carrington visited Mr D. O’Brien’s stables, at Christchurch, last week. The New South Wales Governor thought a lot of Hazel,, the Nordenfeldt— Ouida two-year-old.
