VICE-REGAL RECEPTION
ARRIVAL OF LORDS ONSLOW AND CARRINGTON. Auckland, January 30. The reception accorded to His Excellency the Governor, Lord Onslow, Lord Carrington, Governor of New South Wales, and the Vice-Regal party, on their arrival from Rotorua by train on Tuesday afternoon, was of the most hearty description. The Jubilee decorations in the lower part of Queen-street had been got into a forward condition in honour of the occasion, and the public assembled in immense numbers in the vicinity of the station. Colonel Shepherd had arranged for a Guard of Honour to be in attendance at 5 p.m., but, owing to some misapprehension, the hour for their muster was fixed just 60 minutes late, and the volunteers could not be present in time to meet the train, which arrived at 4 p.m. sharp. The Guard of Honour was, however, provided by a detachment of police, under Inspector Broham,. and the public assembled made up for the absence of the volunteers by the heartiness of their reception. _■ Shortly before four o’clock His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. H. Upton) and the Town Clerk (Mr P. A. Philips) drove to the Railway Station, and other carriages were provided for members of the Vice-Regal party. Amongst those present on the railway platform were :—Mr Devore (Chairman of the Jubilee Committee), Colonel Shepherd (officer commanding the district), Major Pirie, Major Gascoyne (sheriff), Captain C. Robertson, Messrs T. Thompson, R. Hobbs, W. Kelly, M.H.R.’s, Councillor Crowther, Dr. Walker, Messrs A. K. Taylor (Presidentof the Auckland Racing Club), Monsignor McDonald, Father • Hackett, Rabbi Goldstein, Revs. Boler (chaplain Waikato Cavalry), Gideon Smales, Messrs T. W. Lewis (Under-Secretary Native Department), Meysey Thompson, Seymour George, L. D. Nathan, Alfred. Nathan, James Russell, S. Locke (East Coast), J. Coates, Rewi (Ngatimaniapoto), Kiriwiri Rewiti (nephew of Paora Tuhaere, of Orakei), Te Kepa,. Paraone, Wi Oweti, of the Ngatiwhatua, and. others. On arrival of the gubernatorial party, His Worship the Mayor expressed on behalf of the citizens of Auckland a cordial welcome to Lord Onslow and Lord Carrington, and cheers which were called for the distinguished visitors were given with enthusiasm. Amongst those assembled jwere a great many Maori chiefs, notably Rewi, who was at his urgent request introduced to the two Governors, and expressed the utmost pleasure oh his request being acceded to. first saluted Lord Onslow, and then turning to Lord Carrington, he said:—“l also salute thee, O Governor of 'Port Jackson !” Lord Onslow said, "I have read of your name all through the history of Now Zealand for many years past. 1 know all the events in which you have taken part. ‘ I am' de : ' lighted indeed that' you have come to meet me. Good-bye;” l - Lord ; Onslow,, Lord Carrington and party were then driven to Government House, other carriages following occupied by the Mayor and Captain Saville, A.D.C., Colonel Shepherd, Mr A. E. Devore, Mr P.,Phillips (Town Clerk), and • Mr Meysey Thompson.... , **•:
