SWIMMING CARNIVAL

TO-DAY’S SPORTS,

To-day’s swimming sports at the Calliope Dock, North Shore, in connection with the Jubilee celebrations, were attended with splendid success. Thousands of people lined the big dock, from the top down to the lowest step at the water edge. It is estimated that between three and four thousand people were present. The weather was splendid, and everything was favourable for a successful carnival. We append results of the various events up to the time of going to press to-day : Maiden Race, 100 yards. Prize, £2 10s--21 starters. The race was very well contested, and resulted : M. Scott ... ... ... ... 1 A. Goldwater 2 J. Macmillan ... ... ... 3 Boys Under 12. 50 Yards (open),—lst prize, £1 10s ; 2nd prize, £1 ; 3rd prize, 10s. There were 14 starters. This race resulted : N. White 1 J. Graham ... ... ... 2 W Kenny 3 W. C. Cossar 4 A protest has been entered against White’s win, owing to his being over-age. Long Dive. —First prize, £3 ; second, £1 10s ; third, 10s. This event was a very interesting one, eleven competitors starting, W. J. Allen won, the length of the dive being no less than 75 yards. Allon was very much exhausted at the finish, and would have sunk but for the plucky action of Messrs J. Missen and A. Myers, who plunged in and rescued him. Boys Under 14. 60 Yards (open). —First, prize, £1 10s; second prize, £1; third prize, 10s. Twenty-two swimmers started. The order was:— W. G. Cossar (4secs) 1 F. Macindoe (lOsecs) ... ... 2 J. Pollock (8 secs) 3 Jubilee Championship of New Zealand, 440 yards. Prize, £lO. There were twenty-two starters. 11. JBailey won, his time being 7 min lOsec. A. N. Duthie was second, and P. Madigan third. Neat Header.— First prize, £1 10s; 2nd prize, £l. A. T. McLean won this event, H. Nicholson, 2nd. Calliope Handicap, 150 yards. Firs* prize, £2los ; second prize, £1 10s ; third prize, 10s. There were forty-four starters, and the race was an exceedingly well-contested one. F. Hedges (30secs) ... ... 1 E. Jones(6osecs) ... ... 2 J. S. Brigham (40secs) ... ... 3 Rarotongan Events. —In the long dive for members of the Rarotongan party of natives now in town there were five competitors. Tangaia won, with a record of 55 yards. There were five starters in the 150-yards race, which was won easily by Kautai, with Fora and Meau second and third. Jubilee Handicap, 300 yards.—After an exciting contest, the race resulted : —F. J. Taylor, 50s, Ist; A. Goldwater, 50s, 2nd; H. Nicholson, lbs, 3rd. Naval Race, all comers.—Six blue jackets competed. Murray won, with Drake and Hayter second and third. These men were all from the Orlando. Back Race, 50 yards.—This was a fine race, and was well fought out. L. M. Myers won, with A. Smith second and J. W. Gittos third. Boys’ Race, under 13.—This was a handicap of 75 yards. A. Upton won, with H. N, Cossar second, and H. Black third. Citizens’ Handicap, 200 yards.—E. S. Gittos won, with A. Smith, A. N. Duthie, and H. Nicholson next in order. Naval Race (Officers). —F. Pierce (H.M.s. Opal) won, with S. H. Skinner (Orlando) second, and J. Armstrong third. The race was an interesting one. Mr J. E. Cooke acted as starter, and discharged his onerous duties very satisfactorily. The judges were Major Anderson and A. N. Myers, assisted by Mr John Marshall, patron of the Club. During the afternoon Professor Pannell exhibited his natatorial skill in some very clever and pretty swimming and diving feats. The professor takes his benefit at the Auckland Graving Dock to-morrow afternoon.
