Domain Board.
The usual monthly meeting of Te Aroha Hot Springs Domain Board was held on Saturday evening last. P;esent : Messrs T.Gavin (chairman), J, Ilott, G. Lipsey, and C. Aliier. Minutes of the previous monthly meeting, and of special meeting, were read and confirmed. Monthly Statement. The following statement was presented for the four weeks ending February Ist 1890 : Jan. 4h, To Balance in B.N.Z 50 13 4 Feb. 1, Bath Receipts ...52 0 0 Jan. 7, C’takers Salaries 10 10 0 10 10 0 Less Liabilities at date 67 19 3 £24 4 1 Correspondence : Advertising Board : From Allan Tracy, Auckland, offering to renew for another year the advertising board—re the springs—at Auckland Station for £lO. Mr Ilott said he thought it would be best to discontinue the board for the present and devote the money to improving the bathing facilities in the Domain. The Chairman and Mr Lipsey were of the same opinion and it was resolved that the advertising board be not renewed this year.
Services in Domain : From Rev F. G. Evans to the Chairman as follows : “ It lias been my desire for some time to hold a series of open air services at Te Aroha during t e summer months, and I have wondered whether your Board would have any objection to our using a part of the Domain for that purpose. The services will be entirely unsectarian, will only be held once a week, and will be about one hour >n length. The part of the Domain which seems most suitable is the hand stand, as it i 3 removed from the traffic to tiie baths, and services held there would not interfere with anyone using the ordinary paths of the Domain. I may mention that Rev Mr Lawry, and I expeot Rev Mr Norrie also, will take part in the meetings, I shall be much obliged if you will kindly bring the matter before the Board at their meeting this evening, and shaP he glad if they can see their way to sanction the proposal,”
The Chairman remarked it was the duty of the Board to attend to the bodily wants of the invalids apd ' isitors ? of the
chrgy to attend to their spiritual wan‘s and no doubt Mr Evans hoped in the way lie indicated to reach some persons who did not attend the services held in the various churches. Mr llotfe said it was a customary thins in the old country for out door services to be held in the public parks, etc. If the permission asked for by Mr Evans were granted however, it should be made a condition that the service conclude in daylight. He also suggested that permission might be granted in the meantime till next monthly meeting, to see if any objections were raised which the Board ought to take cognisance of. Considerable discussion took place on the subject. The Chairman, Messrs llotfe and Lipsey, expressed themselves as being favourable to granting the request, if it could be done without interfering in any way with the convenience and comfort of invalids and visitors generally, and the maintenance of good order. It was ultimately resolved on the motion of the Chairman, second by Mr Lipsey, That Rev Mr Evan’s .application be granted till next monthly meeting, subject to the services being held on Sundays, in daylight, and not to exceed one hour in length. The Chairman, Messrs ITott, and Lipsey voted in favour of the resolution. Mr Ahier refrained from voting. New Bath House : The Chairman reported that the new bath house at the sulphur spring had been satisfactorily completed so far as the contractors were concerned, but some internal fittings ; yet remained unfinished. He also stated that seeing the -wood work was being greatly affected by the sun, he had let. the painting of the building to Mr T. Hood for £3 7s 6d (three coats and to include painting window sashes inside and out, frosting of windows, etc.) without waiting to invite tenders for the work. Resolved that the Chairman’s action be approved. B ind : The Chairman reportel having interviewed the band master(of Te Aroha Brass Band) re playing in the Domain, who, he sard, had apologise i for the delay with respect to the Band’s playing, and gave as a reason they had so little new music, and were short of funds. It was resolued that the Chairman- be authorised to advance portion- of the subsidy (promised to tire Band on condition they played at regular intervals in the Domain) at once to enable the necessary new music to be procured without further delay.
Street Nuisance : Mr Holt drew attention to the great nuisance caused by the offensive -mell from the drain on the road side running past the Domain, and s iid several visitors had complained about the bad drainage at this place.
Tire Chairman remarked it was certainly a very bad state of affairs, and amaging to the place, but did not see what tne Board could do in the matter, as it was under tiie care of tiie Town Board. Mr Ahier said the Town Board had arranged with a man to clean out the drain every morning, and an account for the same ha 1 been passed for payment. General surprise was expressed at this announcement, as it was quite evident the work had not been done. Resolved that the Clerk be instructed to write to the Town Board, drawing attention to the very bad state the drain referred to was in, and requesting that the necessary steps be at once taken to have the nuisance put a stop to. Accounts : The following accounts were passed for payment : H. H. Hayr and Co. (advertising springs in Tourist Guide), L 7 7s ; A. W, Edwards (braid for tennis court, etc.), Ll 3s 5d ; C. E.
