MINING NEWS.

Thames, Jan. 27. Norfolk. —lt has transpired that a crushing of 70 loads quartz from this mine only yielded seven pennyweights of gold altogether.

Otama Claim (Ivuaotunu). —On Monday last I touched the No. 1 lode (cross reef) in the intermediate level. I have not yet cut through it ,as I have had to timber a portion ot the drive and lay the tramway. The prospects from it are very fair. The two men driving this level will start to cut through the reef on Monday and continue straight ahead to intersect No. 2 reef, which should be reached inside of a fortnight if the country holds out, and I am confident it will. The No. 2 reef continues to give out good general crushing dirt, gold frequently showing in the stone. The total distance driven on it is 58 feet. I have 17 tons bagged and packed down to the beach, ready for shipment, and I may have 5 or 6 tons more by the time the cutter arrives. I may mention that this reef is now fully 18 inches in floor and 12 inches in roof of drive, this width being maintained for the last eight or nine feet. In the winze the reef is very strong, at the bottom it is 2, feet thick, and first class ore is being obtained. — H. T. Rowe. Saxon.— A parcel of 151 b capital picked stone was obtained to-day from No. 1 main reef in the winze which is being sunk below No. 5 level. The stone is of excellent quality and is the best obtained from this mine for some time. New Moanataiari. —ln the Fort Russell section the drive on the Golden Age reef is passing through a better class of country, and there is a nice stringer of quartz in the dig of the footwall of the lode. Some good dabs, of gold have been seen in a white stringer a few inches thick running along the foawall in tha intermediate level.
