BITS OF TURF. An important meeting of the New Zealand Stud Company anent the future of the great breeding establishment is called for Monday, the 3rd of February. The weights for the Newmarket Handicap and Australian Cup are due on Monday next. Manton,who isunderthe care of MrW. E. Dakin, is stated to look better now than at any time since his arrival in Victoria. Carbine, Fishwife, Oakleigh, Russley, and Richelieu are all doing nice work. During the week the Committee of the Auckland Racing Club have been engaged inquiring into the running of the horse Barber at the recent Drury races. As the outcome Hawkins, the jockey, was disqualified for twelve months. Soudan, by Musket—Maid of Athol, won the Oakleigh Park Handicap, run near Melbourne, on the 11th January. He started second favourite. T. Loates, the most successful of the English jockeys, can ride at 7st. Trainers are not allowed to run their horses over Randwick before 5 o’clock in the summer months and 6 o’clock in the winter. Lord Hastings has disposed of Melton, the Derby winner of 1885, for £IO,OOO, to the Italian Government. The ugly gorse fence which was the cause of the accident to Chemist in the Auckland Summer Steeplechase, has been reduced by three feet on the landing side. This will be appreciated by the majority of cross country riders. Enfilade, the hitherto disappointing son of Musket, is reported to be doing remarkably well under the care of Tommy Wilson at Ballarat. The veteran trainer has a great opinion of him, and believes an Australian or a Melbourne Cup is not beyond his tether. Victor Hugo, after sundry disappointments, returned Mr Brodribb bis purchase money at Easternwick Park, Melbourne, recently, carrying the top weight of 9st 21b. This was the first success of the son of Chester in his new colours. The Auckland Racing Club were applied to for the use of the Ellerslie racecourse for AucklandTattersall’sClubannual race meeting, but the request was refused. The net values to the winners of the four principal stakes during the past English racing seasons w’ere as follow :—Eclipse Stakes, 11,16550v5. ; Prince of Wales’ Stakes, ll,ooosovs. ; Ivempton Park Royal Stakes, 9,50050v5. ; Lancashire Plate, 9,o'Josovs. The Two Thousand Guineas Stakes, in which liirkham and Narellan will make their first public appearance in England, will be run on Wednesday, the 30th of April, while the Derby is on Wednesday, the 4th June.
