PUHIPUHI SILVER FIELD.
INDIGNATION MEETING AT WHANGAREL . ; ' -v. A PROPOSED RUSH. Wiiangarei, Jan 24. The public indignation meeting in the Public Hall last night was crowded to excess and a unanimous feeling was shown, while the determination was freely expressed to back up a concerted rush to Puhipuhi if the Government refuse to open it. Mr P. S. Brown, county chairman, was president. The following resolutions were passed : I. That this meeting l'espectfully enters its emphatic protest against the continued closure of the Puhipuhi block to mining operations, and expresses its strong indignation at the studied neglect and obstruction to which the North Auckland district is subjected at the hands of the Government. 11. That this meeting urges upon the Government the desirability of opening Puhipuhi to mining operations during the summer months, as in the winter the field is practicably unworkable, and records its opinion that the evidence as to the payable deposits of silver therein is now more than sufficient to justify such a step. (3) That in the eventof the Governmentrefusing to open the field, this meeting recommends the formation of a Defence League to assist in defraying the expenses of defending persons who may be prosecuted for entering the block, to carry on mining or prospecting for gold or silver thereon. The above telegrams were wired to the Government by Messrs Thompson and Hobbs, M.H.R.’s. A telegram was read from Mr Hobbs saying: The movement has my entire sympathy, as the Government does not realise the importance of the discovery or the value of developing it. Steps are now being taken to hold a similar indignation meeting at Kamo.
