The Queen Drew the Line.

The marriage of ‘ Buffalo Bill’s ’ daughter with a young frontiersman serves to touch up the vagaries of so-called high society. It is well known that the attention ‘ Buffalo Bill ’ received in England turned his head. He did not comprehend the distinction society makes between the man who amuses them and the man who bores them. The one is let into the inner circle on a kind of professional standing, while the other is there because he was born there. It was all very well for English court ladies to Etrain their necks to get a glimpse of the clever and handsome showman, but they did not imagine that in so doing they received him on terms of social equality. But ‘ Buffalo Bill 5 thought that as he was there he was there ‘ with both feet,’ as the slang of the day goes, and he sent for his daughter in the expectation that there would be no trouble in getting her presented to the Queen. But a line was drawn which ‘ Buffalo Bill ’ had not seen. If Miss Cody was received it must be as a social equal. As she could not be allowed in the inner circle as her father had been, in a kind of semi-professional capacity, they declined to receive her at all. The young lady resented what, to her, seemed a slight, and returned home. Mr Cody, himself, had not got all the guineas there were in sight, and has remained to take in as many more as he can.
