"GREATER BRITAIN.”
SIR CHARLES DILKE'S BOOK. AUSTRALIANS REFERRED TO. London, January 19. Sir Chas. Dilke’s new book, entitled “ Problems of Greater Britain,” has been published. It contains eulogistic notices of Chief Justice Higinbotham and Sir James Service, the Hoi . Duncan Gillies (Premier) and the Hon. Arthur Deakin (Chief Secretary) oS Victoria. The amhor also expresses the opinion that the Hon. Alfred Deakin will vet be Premier of Victoria, and possibly of Australia. He considers ii certain that New South Wales will increase her Customs duties, and suggests in lieu thereoi the imposition of properly and coal taxes. Sir Henry Parkes is referied to as a prodigy, and the Hon. Bernaid Ringrose Wise, Attorney-General tor New South Wales, is spoken of as “ the man of the future.” Lord Carrington, Governor of New South Wales, is said to be singularly independent of the Colonial uffice, evidenily sharing the same views as Sir Henry Parkes and Mr Dibbs with regard to ultimate separation. He considers that the prosperity of South Australia is assured, and advocates that the demands made by Western Australia for Responsible Government should be fully conceded, and the Wakefield system of colonisation applied. He condemns the vetoing of the Divorce Bill by the Queen, and says that His Honor Chief Justice Higinbotham, of Victoria, will be made . Governor of Victoria if that position be nude elective. | Mr David Sym*>> proprietor of the Melbourne“ Age,” is referred to as the apostle of Protection and forerunner of the Henry George doctrine that the State should be the sole landlord. Sir Henry Parkes’s financial embarrassments, and the consequent raffling of his effects, are referred to, and the writer says that this will only increase the number of his admirers, and it is added that, notwithstanding his debts and his tirashy poetry, Sir Henry’s are powerless to sink him,
