MINING NEWS.
Thames, January 16. Norfolk This morning the mine manager wired :—“ Norfolk dirt shaping airly well. California dirt quality improving. Reef four feet wide; carting and crushing still proceeding.” Lone Hand. The new reef in the low level drive is being stripped, preparatory to another breaking down taking place. Caledonian. —The mine manager reports : In carrying out the work in connection with the new water mains it has been found necessary to cut off the supply for our winding engine for about a fortnight, so that we shall be unable tor that time to wind any quartz to the surface, but as we have plenty of room below at present the men will be employed breaking quartz. The crushing from Red Queen section will be continued with five head until all the quartz on hand is crushed. It contains a little gold, and this parcel will average about 4dwt per load. The reef in the face looks very well, and carries excellent mineral ; while colours of gold are occasionally seen. The No. 2 reef at No. 3 level also looks very well, and is from 2 feet to 3 feet in thickness in very good country, but rather tight just now. Lone Hand.— The new reef recently met with in the General Chute drive at the low level, and which showed dabs of gold when broken down on Monday, is again being stripped by the contractors. It is intended to strip several feet betore a breaking down will again take place. Crushing is proceeding at Bull’s battery, and will be finished about the end ot the week. The General Chute drive at the low level is still going through a splendid class of country. There are now two lodes in the face of the drive. The one that has been carried along in the drive is four inches in thickness. Colours ,of gold were seen through the quartz when breaking it down. The last lode out is, about five inches in thickness, and dabs of gold have been seen through the quartz. There is also splendid mineral running through the quartz. In the drive last on No. 1 leader, there is some good mineral showing through the quartz. In the other slopes colours of gold and good mineral are being seen, and on Monday dabs of go*d were seen freely in the quartz in the tenth stope east, Manchester section. _ In the eleventh stope, the reef is fifteen inches in thickness and shows splendid mineral. Thames, January 17. Saxon. —Water has now made its appearance in the winze being sunk for the purpose of draining a shaft below No. 5 level. This being the case, it is likely that the attempt to drain the. shaft by this means will unfortunately prove unsuccessful. New Alburnia.— -Jobe and party are still sinking the winze on Dixon’s reef, which averages from twelve to eighteen inches wide. Adeline Amalgamated.— The Dubbo tunnel has been extended two feet on the line of the reef, which is still very much broken up and making a lot of water. To-morrow an underhand stope will be started in the floor of the level where Ritchie got his gold, to see if the patch goes down, as very fair dish prospects can be got from the floor of the level; New Alburnia. —The drive on the Sons of Freedom reef has been extended a further distance of 26 feet at the battery level during the past fortnight. The refif has lately been split up, and only the hangingwall portion has consequently been followed, but as it looks poor and small, and has a bearing away from where he wants to go, the manager has had a survey made of the leader which showed gold. He now finds that to .hole '‘through to the crosscut qpicklyy; this /will be the best leader to drive qpon, and has, therefore, started to do so. It is Mr Radford’s intention to as soon as possible clean and repair the drive in Devon ground so as to get at the Alburnia new specimen leader, which has never been driven on to the junction. There will be si large block of ground available here should it prove payable. , i > r .•' 1 ’ '*
Royal Oak.— The directors have received 1 the following report :—Since last report there has been another breading down of the reef in the winze. The result did not! come up to expectation. The reef was large, but only showed blotches of; gold. The gold is making more solid in the stone going down. There has come a turn in the hanging wall, which accounts for the lode : not being.:-so ,_solid; The reef h as also .been taken down in No! 3 leyel, whioh showed blotches of gold going up, along the cross dead. This run is small at present, but , has the appearance of extending. at any- time.- o The ground is most favourable looking for gold. * There, is nothing, new tp report from the tribute portion of. the mine. They are at present connecting No. ; l, : reef with. No. 2 level on Poverty B ranch.-t-Peter Reid, Mine Manager., Coromandel, January 15th. ••>... v - v. J. ■ -Thames; Jan..2o. ‘ Saxok. The’, battery is' keptgoing steadily for the week, and the crushing has been shaping si milarty" to previous weeks, but the picked stohe is : not cominjg to hand, as vwell as. could bp wished. The No. 1
main reef in the winze from No. 5 level is fully five feet thick, carrying splendid mineral indications. It is still carrying gold, and a few pounds of picked Ptone are occasionally saved. ‘ Lone Hand.— This morning the mine manager wired “ Fifty loads quartz and 151 b picked stone crushed for lOOoz gold ; silver to retort.” Blanche.—There is little change to report in the Blanche mine. The lower reef is being cleaned out and it is expected that next week work will be commenced on the reef. New Prince Imperial.— The leader in the winze is about 6 inches thick and carries a good deal of mineral. About lib of picked stone has been got from it. The ground is expected to soon change for the better again in the leader in the stopes. A good many dabs of gold are seen in it. The contractors at No. 3 level above the cross cut, in sixteen feet, cut a nice leader about three inches thick. It is fine country for gold, there being a lot of promising mineral veins through the sandstone. • New Moanatairi.— The drive on the cross-reef in Nonpareil section, No. 3 level, is now passing through splendid country, and is now within eight feet of the boundary. The lode looks well. The Age reef in the drive on Point Russell level is looking better, but there has been no gold seon lately. Otama Claim, Kuaotonu.— During the past week 1 have driven 41 feet in the intermediate level through a splendid class of sandstone. Three small leaders have been intersected, all carrying a fair percentage of gold. No. 1 reef should be in hand early next week. Upper level : I have driven north: and south on No. 2 leader a distance of 35 feet ; it has averaged 1 foot thick with gold showing freely the whole distance. From this lode I have about 17 tons to grass, and expect by the time the cutter arrives to have fully 20 tons or more. I have about 7 pounds of specimens in hand. The reef in north face to-night is 2 feet thick,' and in the south face over 3 feet thick.—H. T. Rowe.
New Norfolk. To-day the mine manager wired :—“ Secured a few pounds picked stone Norfolk reef on Saturday ; a little gold still showing in reef.”
