TOWN BOARD .
Thk ordinary monthly meeting of Te Aroha Town Board (a-ijonrne 1 from 11th inst. owing to their being no quorum then present) was held at the Palace Hotel on Saturday evening last. Present : Messrs Edw. Gallagher (chairman) ; Jas. Mills ; J. B. lleathcote ; also the Clerk, Mr C. Ahier. Minutes of the previous monthly meeting were read and confirmed ; also of, special meeting, held on-28th December on account of the steps taken by the Board for levying a rate being illegal, necessitating the Board commencing afresh with respect to rate levying. lie Special Meeting: The Clerk informed the Chairman that the special meeting convened for January 15tli had been adjourned to that evening (18th January). Correspondence : Goldfield’s Revenue: From the Treasuiy, informing th** Board that the sum of 3s 91 liad been placed to their credit at Bank New Zealand, being goldfield revenue for month of November, 8s less charges 4s 3d. Received. Street Traffic : From Hetherington and Co., drawing the Boards attention to the line of road now being greatly used for traffic (Whitaker street into Church street and vice versa) whereby they considered the verandah post at the corner of their shop was endangered. Referred to Works Committee.
Resignation : From Geo. Ebert (dated -December 28th) resigning his position as a member of ihe B'jard, stating he could not devote the time necessary for attending the business of the Board. Resolved that Mr Ebert’s resignation be accepted. Valuation. Roll : A communication from Government re'the provisions of the Crown and Native Land’s Rating Act Repeal Act (TB3B j, and the rating of the Court House and Police Barracks, Te Aroha, valued at £7OO (read at the special meeting of the Board on December 28th) was again read. Extraordinary Vacancy: It was stated Mr Crump bad acted as Returning Office? in the past for the Town Board, whereupon the Chairman moved that Mr Crump be appointed Returning Officer for the election of a member in the rootp of Mr Ebert resigned, and that he be duly notified of the extraordinary vacancy had t}ju§ geepryed, The motion
was duly seconded, and carried. Accounts: The following accounts were passed for; payment :—F. Pavitf, for services in preparing Valuation Roll, £3 3s ; Rent of Letter Box at Post Office for six months, lOs ; C. Balcke, stationery, 11s lOd ; Waikato Times, book of 200 rate demand forms, 15s ; C. Ahier, for 9in. pipe and 1-16 ft, 9 x 2 board, 7s : T.„Presley, repairing bridge (labour), Is 6d ; Inspector Nuisances (John Dare), salary one quarter., £2 10s. Notices of Motion : The Clerk read the following notices of mol ion: (1 )Tabled atspecial meeting,held onDecember2Bth, by Mr Mills, “ That at the next ordinary monthly meeting of the Boaid he would move that the resolutions passed at the ordinary monthly meeting, held on November 9th, and at special meeting on December 14th, re striking a rate, be rescinded.” Mr Mills : There was no necessity for my moving that resolution, as proposed. Clerk : No there was not. Not ; ce of motion allowed to lapse : (2) Notice of motion, given by the Chairman at special meeting hebEon December 28th, “ That at a special meeting of the Board to l>e held on January 15th he would move that a rate of Gd in the £ be struck.” Chairman : In accordance with that notice, I now move : That a rale of Gd in the £ on all the rateable propeity within Te Aroha Town District be struck.” Seconded by Mr Mills arid carried* The Chairman then declared the meeting (dosed.
