So great was the confidence of her owner and his friends, that The Gift left the paddock a strong favourite at 4to 1, while Sir William swas strongly supported by the public at a point longerodds. ' The start was an excellent one, and when half .the distance had been travelled, The Gift, who held a splendid position against theVrails, and Sir William on the outside, shook off their horses, .and The Gift, showing' more; pace than the son of Sir Modred, won all out by aboub thiee lengths.
