Phylloxera in Auckland.
REPORT BY MR MASKELL. Wellington, Jan 15. The Government have received a report from Mr W. M. Maskell on the alleged outbreak of phylloxera in the vines in,Auckland district. Specimens were submi ted to Mr Masked, who says he sees no reason to doubt that they are the true phylloxera, and recommends that the severest possible remedy should be applied to the districts round Auckland, that remedy being the total destruction of every vine in the town and district of Auckland. Upon receiving this report the Government, before proceeding to act upon it, consulted the Solicitor-General, who advised th.fe the Government had no legal authority to order the destruction of the vines either with or without compensation. Nothing, therefore, can be done until next session, when the Government propose to ask Parliament to pass an Act empowering them to deal with the matter. Application has been made to the Governments of the colonies of Victoria South Australia, and Nt-w South Wales for copies of the Acts and regulations now in force in those colonies respecting the disease.
