ENGLAND AND PORTUGAL.
THE ZAMBESI DISPUTE. REPLY FROM PORTUGAL. London, January 11. The repty of the Portuguese Government to Lord Salisbury’s memorandum is considered satisfactory, inasmuch as it affords a basis for amicable delimitation of the territory in dispute. The Portuguese Government have promised that free passage will be allowed the Consular ma Is. The British fleet at Gibraltar is dispersing. The British squadron are now steaming south from Zanzibar. A summary of the reply of the Portuguese Government to Lord Salis bury’s memorandum on the Zambesi difficulty has been cabled to the Piemier. It is understood that the effect of the reply is that Portugal agrees to withdraw the claim to Nyassa highlands, and will restore the status quo and the right of way to sea, and has made a promise of reparation, subject to the result of an inquiry into the matter.
