LORD FALMOUTH’S SIXPENNY WAGER.
The London "Field,” with the assistance of an old racing correspondent, has brought to light the true facts of Lord Falmouth s sixpenny wager. It appears that his lordship and his old trainer John Scott, of Whitewall, betted the large sum of sixpence on two occasions. The first was at the Newmarket Second October meeting, 1861, when Q.E.D. defeated Lord Stamford’s King of Hearts, His lordship had the sixpence at the back of a pin, which consisted of a jockey’s cap formed of a carbuncle, with a diamond at the top to represent the button, and set in black and white enamel.thusproducinghislordship’scolours. The second bet was at Ascot in 1864, when Mr Bowes’s Baragah beat his lordship’s Holly Fox for the Sixth Biennial Stakes. That sixpence was set inside the lid of a very elegant silver snuff box, with John Scott’s monogram outside. Mrs Scott had no bet with his lordship at any time, but he made her a present of a beautiful brooch, 6et with turquoises, and a splendid bracelet set with carbuncles and diamonds. He also gave her husband a magnificent silver ewer, which stands about 28in high, and is of a most elegant shape and workmanship. It was given in commemoration of Hurricane winning the One Thousand, and was followed by a present of £SCG after Queen Bertha won the Oaks..
