SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Te Aroha School Committee ('adjourned from Gth inst), was held on Monday evening. Present: Rev S. Lawry (chairman.), Alessrs Ilott, Alenzie, Armit, and Heathcote. Alinutes of the previous monthly meeting, also of special meeting held on December lltli, were read and confirmed. Correspondence : Circular From the Board of Education notifying the Committee in accordance with Section 15 of the Education Act, that the three members of the Board who would retire on 31st March next would be Alessrs Theo. Cooper ; Wm. P. Aloat ; and R. Udy. That the other members of the Board are Messrs Jas. W. Carr ; D, Goldie ; Jas. AI. Lennox ; S. Luke ; li. Alonk ; J and J. 11. Upton. The retiring members are eligible for re-election, and between Island 31st January it was required that each Committee trar.snvt to the Board the names of two persons qualified to be m mil era ; their written consent being first obtained. The names of tbe persons so nominated will be notified by the Board and transmitted to each Committee, and on or before 28th February each Committee is to forward to the Secretary of the Board a list of not more than three of the persons whose names shall have been thus notified, etc.

The Chairman said with reference to this matter no communication hail yet been received from any of the candidates for the position ; consequently it would be necessary to call a special meeting during the month to consider any such applications when received. The usual monthly report from the head teacher was read ; also monthly certificate, and copy of quarterly certificate forwarded Board of Education, The monthly certificate for December showed the number on the roll to be 157, average attendance 128-4. The quarterly report set forth the following particulars; Number in Infant Class, males 28, females 31, total 59 ; preparing for Standard 1, males 10, females 11, total 21; for Standard 2, males 8, females 9, total 17 ; for Standard 3, males 15, females ICJ total 31; for. Standard 4, males' G, v females 12, total 18 ; for Standard s;* males 2, females 6, total 8'; for Standard 6. males 2, females 0, total 2 ; passed Standard 6, female 1. Total 157. Mr llott drew attention to the fact that tlie School grounds had been utilised both by night and day for .some little time past for. paddocking horses ; which practice he thought should qt once Be put a stop to ; as horses wefe liable to injure the'young trees an 1 shrubs, and certainly trampled down the plants, etc., in the, beds. diil not think they would do any harm. Mr Holt : Perhaps Mr Ileathcote i.~ not aware that a resolution stands in the Minutes forbidding any one from putting horses into the school ground. Mr Ileathcote said lie was not awaie of the resolution, and would: not put his horfc.es in again. It was decided that the upper, as well as the lower gate in the school grounds must be kept locked. Resolved on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr Ilott, that the Secretary be instructed to convey to Mr J. Woods, the best thanks of the Committee, for allowing the use of his paddock at Te Aroha West, for school treat purposes. Resolved on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr Ilott, that application be made to the Roard of Education for the sum of £3 3s, cost of repairs to teacher’s residence carried out by the instruction of the Board. The Secretary read a rough draft of the balance sheet to he submitted to the auditor, which was approved, The following accounts were passed for payment : G. Gapes, repairs to teachers residence, £3 3s; Mrs Erasmus, cleaning school, £1 3s 4d. This was all the business.
