AUSTRALASIAN ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE.

A very interesting gathering in connection with the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science commences in Melbourne on January 7. As in the case of the British Association, ladies, as well as gentlemen, are. eligible for membership, and it is hoped that, as in the Home Society, members may be largely drawn from amongst those who are interested in the popular side of science. Special or technical acquaintance with scientific subjects is not a necessary qualification for mombcrsnip. The first meeting was held in Sydney last year ; the second gathering is to be held in Melbourne commencing on January 7th, 1890, '’hen the President-elect, the Baron von F.R.S., M. and Ph.D. will de; V e r the inaugural address. A., of Auckland, who will preside over the section of biology, and Professor Hutton, F.G.S., of Christchurch, who is President of the geology section. In addition to the meetings for the reading of papers the proceedings will partake of a social character. On the afternoon of Tuesday, January 7th, the members will be received by the President-elect at a conversazione to bo held in the University grounds. On thefollowingThursdayevening another conversazione will be held in the same place, when tho lake and grounds will be specially illuminated. Sir William and Lady Clarke have kindly promised to assist by inviting members to a garden party at Rupertswood, Sunbury, and on the evening of Saturday, January 11, a concert will be given, at which the Melbourne and Metropolitan Liedertafels have promised to give their assistance, together with several leading artists, and at which, in all probability; the Victorian orchestra will perform. The Government have placed the sum of £I,OOO on the estimates to assist in do fraying the expenses of the meeting, and of the publication of the volume of transactions, a copy of which will be issued to every member. The meetings commence on January 7th, and extend over the following seven days, after which a number of excursions to various places of interest, as the Australian Alps, Gippsland Lakes, and the Black Spur, will take place. Visits will also be paid during the course of the meeting to various places of interest, such as the ; Mint; the ; House of Parliament, the railway workshops at Newport, the tramway sheds, etc. Intending subscribers should communicate as soon as possible with the hon; secretary of the Association at the Royal Society’s Hall, Vic-toria-street, Melbourne, or with Professor A. P. Thomas, M.A., Auckland, from whom forms of application for membership may be obtained.* The New Zealand Steamship Company has undertaken to carry members to and from Melbourne at excursion : rates.
