White. Position : Black men on 4,9, 21; white men 11, 26, 29. White to play and win. & Solution to Problem No. 95. S-14 • 11-18 3- 8 3-10 31-29 18- 9 2C-24 12- 3 27-23 B. wins. 10-15 28-19 2- 7 18-27 R.W., Newton. Correct solution also by J. Wright. Here is another solution by C. W., Newton. Black men on 2,5, 9, 10, 20 ; kings 27, 31. White men on 12, 18, 25, 28, 30 ; kings 11, 17. Black to play and win : 9-14 11-18 3- 8 3-10 18-27 18- 9 20-24 12- 3 27-23 31-29 10-15 28-19 2- 7 B. wins. The above problem (says Mr Belasco) was an outcome of an end game. I was a man down, and the position was as follows : Black kings on 19, 27, 30, 31. White man on 28. White kings on 9, 14, 17, 18. It was my opponent’s turn to play, and greatly to my delight he gave me 14-10. I then, much to his surpriso, won by 19-24, followed by 27-23. This led to the compilation of the above. Game played at Lyttelton between Mr H. Henderson (late of Auckland) and Mr J. Wyllio in the latter’s recent visit to New Zealand. Score from the “ Lyttelton Times.”
